Drums
A new teacher joined our school when I was in Primary 3. She was a drummer and was keen to teach us how to play the drums. I thought this was amazing and would stay behind with a few others after school one day a week to get my lesson - minimum effort. The opportunity had landed in my lap and so I thought I’d make the most of it. When I finished primary school, it was going to require a bit of effort to continue to learn the drums… I chose not to make it.
My friend did. He would make the time and effort to travel to his drumming lessons, practice often, sit and pass all his exams, go to music college, play in multiple bands spanning multiple genres, record albums and eps, tour, play festivals and own a very highly thought of independent venue. Drumming isn’t his life, just a part of it, but the effort he put in when we were kids and continued to do as we get older, afforded him wonderful opportunities to experience his life in a way that wouldn’t have been possible without drumming… same opportunity - different outcome.
